Finished —  Coraline

In active progress — The Forgotten Garden – the further into this novel I get, the more I’m enjoying it.  It’s certainly not a quick read, and I’m still having some slight issues with the abrupt transitions from one time period to another.  Since my last update, we’ve added chapters taking place in 1900 in addition to those occuring in 1913, 1930, 1975/76, and 2005.  But I’m find the 1900 storyline, following 12-year-old Eliza, to be the most compelling yet, and the many, many pieces of the puzzle are starting to fit together better.

Also, I’m still working on the audio version of Tess of the d’Urbervilles, and am currently about two-thirds of the way through.  I’ve heard Tess described as one of the great protagonists of British literature, but I’m having trouble understanding that claim.  Although the book is thoughfully and beautifully written, it’s hard to not become angry with the society portrayed within it and the characters that allow themselves to become victims of it.  However, I will save my full rant for when I finish the book, just in case something in the final third redeems Tess and her contemporaries in my eyes.

About to start — American Rust, which was a Goodreads giveaway and arrived in the mail over the weekend.   So far, I’ve only had a chance to glance over the first page, but it appeared promising.

Your turn — what book(s) are you currently making your way through?
